Forcing African Americans to relocate to Haiti, Canada, Africa, LAtin America or any other country that is not apart of America, will cause difficulties, not only for African Americans but for the natives of the land of which they are forced to inhabit. Haiti and Canada are especially bad places of residents for the African Americans because of language and culture differences. Sure, it is possible to assimilate and move past all the barriers and differences that the two cultures mat have, but who wants to do that? To make life easier on Blacks and others, why not keep them in America but have them settle where noone else is, like westward or in states where the population is low and they can live there. Canada might not be as accepting as they were when escaped slaves would come. In Haiti another language is spoken and there is a whole other culture that is present there.
This is a list of common reasons on why We as African Americans would like to emigrate outside of the United States to other territories such as Africa, Canada, and even Latin America. Since we didn’t voluntarily emigrate to this country but rather by brute force and shackles (citation is in the Letter to Cincinnati), we feel as though this is the only option for us as African Americans to get an equal chance at life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which are our unalienable rights granted to us and shouldn’t be taken away from us.
Major reasons of dissatisfaction…
1. Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. How can we ever be free if we are constantly threatened of being captured even if we are TRULY free African Americans. (citation is the Fugitive Slave Act).
2. Even in the “so called” free states we are denied suffrage(right to vote), and even up until 1848 in Ohio and Pennsylvania we were denied our basic rights in the Courts of Common Pleas.(citation Provincial Freeman – Wesely W. Tate).
3. The states of Indiana and Illinois which are “supposed” to be free states even started to pass stringent laws, forbidding us to immigrate into them. (citation Provincial Freeman – Wesely W. Tate).
4. Even in the Constitution we are referred to as 3/5ths of a person. ( citation is in the Constitution. Article 1 – Section 3).
5. There has been segregation in the communities that ban us from community related areas such as inns, taverns, theaters, resorts, etc. (citation is from our notes from class).
6. There have been separate laws made for Blacks known as the Black Codes, which vary on a state and local level which take away our civil rights and liberties as a person. (citation is from our notes from class)
- 5 reasons against emigration:
- 1 America is our country as much as theirs
- 2 Our home is here now with our family and friends
- 3 There have been moves of progress towards freedom and equality
- 4 The nation is built on principles of freedom and liberty
- 5 Instead of leaving we should stay and fight for our rights
There have been moves of progress towards freedom and equality in the United States with the Abolitionist movement and Anti – Slavery movement. Not only have these movements been begun and supported by whites and blacks alike, but the nation itself is based on the principles which these movements are fighting for. They support liberty, equality, and freedom. It is hoped that a combination of realizing these principles and these two movements will combine to have a great and changing effect on the slavery institution. We oppose the idea of emigration and the ACS because in the past few years changes have been made and the future holds a brighter future than the generations of slavery before now. These propositions of emigration of the slaves and free blacks alike to the other Americas and to Africa will void and erase all of the efforts to end and abolish the slavery in the United States. It will only remove the blacks and therefore do away with all of the reasons as to why these blacks and whites of these movements are fighting for their causes and only stall the solving of the problem. If the emigration movement passes then the blacks will be removed from the country and the issues of slavery and discrimination have no chance to be solved. We cannot let free blacks and slaves leave and let white feel that they are inferior to them. We have to show them that blacks can also succeed in America and highlight the changes we have achieve in the North. We have to keep on fighting and helping slaves in the South achieve freedom and the rights that every human person deserves. Also, the family ties and the friendship roots that the slaves and free blacks have created are important and they feel that they should not have to leave those things behind. This country is as much theirs as it is the whites. The blacks have been here around the same amount of time and have done enough work for this country to call it their home as well. We have the right to stay in our homeland and we should always be a reminder to whites of the institution of slavery.
We can “Contribute to the world’s well-being and civilization by increasing commerce, trade, and missionary work. To meet this obligation, he calls for the “cultivation” of the nation’s citizens and the development of its natural resources” (African-American Pamphlet Collection at the Library of Congress).
There is a proposition in congress to build a passage between United States and Liberia to transport all the African Americans and that is funded by ACS. That is being accepted well by the African American society. We were brought here by force I see no reason for us to stay. (82 Alabama Letter)
The people of Liberia have created their own government (163 Delaney).
The laws of the Liberian government provide a school in every town (167 Delaney).
We can assist with production problems which include poor planting practices; a lack of good planting equipment; pest and disease infestation; and poor harvest handling practices.
Instead of waiting in the United States for us African Americans to gain our freedom we can just simply go back to our origin were we are accepted, and no one knows when the African Americans will ever get freedom in the United States.
Liberia became an independent nation in 1847; Joseph Jenkins Roberts – a merchant who had emigrated from Virginia twenty years earlier – was elected president. Proving that Liberia is open to outsiders and there would be no problems in migrating to Liberia. And the countries first university was established when Roberts became president. As you are well aware staying in the United States does not benefit us as African Americans. By emigrating somewhere else in the Western Hemisphere such as Canada we as African Americans will have the chance of being equal with natural rights to self-government as the Declaration of Indepence states for the U.S.
Relocating to Africa would only give the slaveholders an upper hand and forever believe that we are nothing more than an African-slave.
Favoring emigration to Canda means:
- Self-emancipation
-Being considered a free citizen and not 3/5 of a person
-Better education for our children
-Labor that’s in good demand for both men and women
-The ability to have your own land of rich soil for production of wheat and other grains.
If we look back to the 1830s, we can see how much has changed. Anti-slavery movements used to be a small fringe movement. The government put these issues on the back burner, where they got little to no attention. Now, in 1854, the anti-slavery movements are one of the main issues that the government is dealing with. Why should we leave our country now, when the hope for freedom is at it’s
greatest? If we look to the Constitution, we can also see hope for the future. While many argue that the Constitution is for slavery. I believe that it is an anti-slavery document. The word “slave” is never actually used. This proves that our government does not want slavery to be a part of our history. They are ashamed of it. What will we be proving by leaving now? Just in 1850, Senator Henry Clay’s Compromise passed. This made California a state; a slavery free state. Back in 1847-48, there was the Free Soil party, a US political party that opposed the extension of slavery into territories newly gained from Mexico. In 1847, Frederick Douglas began the publication of the first abolitionist newspaper, The North Star. All of these recent events also prove that our society is changing, slowly but surely.
And to conclude our debate, we want to recap on all the reasons why staying in America is the best choice for us and emigration can be dangerous and is a risk that we should not risk taking. America is our country as much as theirs. Haiti and Canada are especially bad places of residents for the African Americans because of language and culture differences. We also are not used to their climate and cropping will be a challenge. And who is to say that any other country is going to welcome thousands of us with open arms, that is unlikely to happen. Our home is here now with our family and friends. There have been moves of progress towards freedom and equality. The nation is built on principles of freedom and liberty. Instead of leaving we should stay and fight for our rights. The white people here would love for us to leave, we shouldn’t let them win. If we leave, all the progress that has been made will diminish and our friends and family left here in slavery, could possibly suffer in slavery for centuries.
